Puzzles built for short rides

Puzzles built for short rides

July 16, 2026 · Marta Kowalczyk

A commute puzzle has one job: fit into the gap between two stops. The best ones hand you a self-contained problem, let you solve it, and never punish you for closing the app mid-level. That's harder to design than it sounds.

Garden of Gears nails this. Each puzzle is a tidy box with a clear goal, no timer breathing down your neck. I can do three levels on a short ride and feel like I accomplished something.

What ruins a commute puzzle is an energy meter or a forced online check. If a game stops me from playing because I 'ran out of lives,' it comes straight off the test phone.

My rule of thumb: if you can enjoy a session with no signal and no pressure, it's a keeper. Everything else is just noise.
